2012 Style Resolutions

I am not a huge fan of making new years resolutions, I never stick to them, so what is the point, but when it comes to my wardrobe, I have to confess to sometimes making "style resolutions" and 2012 is one of those years when I have to take my wardrobe by the horns and fill the gaps I have identified.

Carrie Bradshaw's closet from Sex and the City mixes clothing storage options.

I have had a good look through my wardrobe and have made a realistic list, which means one that does not include Louboutins or a Chanel 2.55 because, a) it goes without saying that I want these and b) I still can't afford them, but I have identified some gaps and found some pieces that need replacing like my New Look red ballet flats which desperately need to wing their way to the green wheelie bin on the drive and be magically replaced, with a far more expensive pair. Just like black flats, I have found red to be indispensable and love them with breton tops and jeans, but the soles are so thin on the New Look ones, that they kill my feet just walking down my unmade road, where every small stone feels as though it is a drawing pin in disguise - ouch, but they are such a nice shade of red and I am not sure if the one's I have found in Kurt Geiger sale are a bit too bright for me.....

Kurt Geiger Lucille pumps were £70 now £35 and if I make an order, I will just have to get the cuff, available in gold or silver and reduced from £50 to £13, now that is what David Dickinson would call a "real deal".

I am also in dire need of new jeans. I live and die in my Citizens of Humanity dark indigo skinnies, they are by far, the most comfortable pair I own and I have been on the lookout for a black or grey pair in the sales but to no avail, sadly, so I shall continue to check The Outnet, who do have grey but not in my size, still, you never know your luck!

Tops is another area that needs "topping" up, so to speak.  I ruin so many tops that I am thinking I need some patterned or print ones that won't show the fat splashes when I'm cooking or the marks left when I drop dinner down myself, which seems to have become a regular occurrence of late (is it an age thing or should I get off the sofa and sit up the table more?).

I still have my Christmas money, which is a "miracle on 34th street" in itself, but as yet another style resolution this year was to not be lured by massive reductions and purchase things I don't really need, I have held off and really thought about the things I need even though a certain Viv Westwood dress that is only £72 has been put in my net-a-porter shopping basket so many times its a joke, but I have remained strong as I really don't have anywhere to wear it!

Isabella Oliver 365 collection relaxed merino roll neck was £115 now £80.50 remains on my lust list even though most of my jumpers are grey and as much as I adore the other colours available, I still want it!

I would also purchase the whole Isabella Oliver collection in the Sale if I had the money and although a few things are on my "must have" list, most of the items I want have only small reductions and are not yet in the 60% off category, so I am biding my time and have to hope that my size doesn't sell out beforehand!

Have you made any style resolutions for 2012? Maybe you have decided to give the High Street a miss and plump for a couple of investment purchases or maybe you are putting spending on hold for a while in favour of shopping your own wardrobe and looking at ways to wear clothes that haven't seen the light of day for a while, but be sure to share your wardrobe's hopes and dreams for the future!

  1. Great style resolutions! I'm giving the sales a miss this year, I always end up with things I don't need! I''d rather wait for Spring and spend a bit more on investment pieces!

  2. I am in love with all of the accessories in Kurt Geiger right now!! I have bought up half of the sale stock, I swear! And want to go back for the other half just as soon as I can!! Those red pumps are awesome - I think bright footwear is the way forward - it's the only way I ever wear brights! :) xx

  5. Hi my dear!! I've done really well, I scored 3 designer jeans in the charity shops this week, all for under a tenner-post to come! Denim is definitely my favourite style staple for this summer and am looking out for some more denim shirts, which like you agree they are a true style purchase! Just a thought, its not a style statement, but how about investing in a apron, a la Cath Kidston or similar-could save all your clothes from those fat splashes! xxx

  6. Excellent post and well thought out for 2012!
That's funny, I'm also desperately wanting a VW dress and I have at least 2 occasions to wear it this year but that's all so it's not going on the to buy list.

I'm doing a bit of both, made a couple of resolutions and shopping my closet. So my resolutions are adding pattern/texture and colour (not necessarily at the same time, you understand), accessorise much more and modernising my outfits. Of course to be achieved with the least amount of spending as that is the one overall resolution for me this year....

  7. Sharon - such a good idea about the apron, I was hoping to get one for Xmas as Christmas Day lunch is the biggest culprit!

  10. I love the 'shopping your wardrobe' idea and that has become my mantra. Apart from underwear and tights I am not going to buy any more clothes deffo in Jan and Feb at least and trying to do not until my birthday mid March (A girls gotta have a new dress for her birthday). It was hard not to click onto that Viv dress (Be strong, be strong). two questions I am going to ask myself are 'Do you like this because you have something similar already? Could you get the same effect from stuff you already have ' and 'How will this enhance your life" (,Maybe that's 3 questions - anyway). I am also going to more clothes swaps!

  12. Deborah - So funny, you know you deserve it and what a great birthday dress. Just ask people for money for your birthday to justify the cost!

  13. I can highly recommend the Lanvin ballerinas. The are v comfie and I walk everywhere in them. They are expensive, but often you can find on sale. Cost/wear they are a bargain.

My NY resolution is to save money and not shop...however I am failing dismally. PS I too have been mulling over Viv Westwood dress!

  14. Michelle, I had a pair of Lanvin a few years back and they killed my feet where the elastic is at the heel. I sold them on ebay. Next time need to go up a size and to be honest I haven't seen any red ones this season x
